As the first word in the phrase REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE, reduce is considered the most important. If we can all reduce the amount of waste we create, there will be less material that we need to divert.

One of the most important strategies related to reduce is to buy only what you need. If everyone started practicing this strategy, we would have to manage far less waste in our province.

Here are some simple tips for REDUCING your waste:

  • Buy in bulk or economy size - this uses less packaging and saves you money.
  • Bring a reusable shopping bag rather than plastic bags.
  • Store leftover food in resealable containers.
  • Pack a wasteless lunch for you and everyone in your home.
  • Use a reusable lunch box and reusable containers.
  • Use rechargeable batteries - this will help reduce your waste and save you money.
  • Switch to electronic billing.
  • Donate older furniture, clothing and other household items to local charities.
  • Rent or borrow seldom used items, rather than buying.
  • Bring a reusable coffee mug to the coffee shop - it's good for the earth and will sometimes even get you a discount!
  • Donate magazines to a seniors residence or doctor's offices.
  • Reduce toxic chemicals in your home. Whenever possible, buy natural-based products.
  • Visit second hand clothing stores to perk up your wardrobe.
  • Consider cloth diapers for your family - thousands of diapers per child are used
